We are thrilled  to announce that our homebred gelding Valen's Prophecy and his owner Kianna Luscher ended up 2011 Zone 2 Champion for Large Junior Hunter 15 & Under.  It was their first year competing in the Juniors and what a great year it was.  We are so proud of this pair, and find it so rewarding to see one of our "kids" doing so well.  Photo of Kianna and Valen at 2011 East Coast Junior Hunter Finals.

This past Sunday Carolyn and Barbara competed in their first ever judged pleasure ride.  It was held at the beautiful Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, VA and the weather was absolutely perfect.  Catty and Paks were a bit too attached during the ride, but handled the unique obstacles very well.  Everyone had a great time, and it was thrilling that both riders placed in the Novice Horse and Rider divisions.  With more practice over the winter they hope to compete in more judged rides next year.

The Morven Park history trail ride yesterday was quite a blast.  Barbara and Carolyn thorougly enjoyed riding on such a lovely day, and the historic stops along the ride were very interesting.  It was also quite exciting for them to be able to ride right in front of the Governor's mansion.  Catty and Paks were very well behaved on the ride, and handled all the different sites wonderfully.  A couple photos from the ride below.

We are really looking forward to her next show, which will be Virginia Summer Dressage at the Meadow in June.

Well this past Sunday was almost a horrible day for us here at Ash Knoll Farm, but luckily what looked to be an absolutely dire situation ended with a miracle.  Catty and Carolyn went to a cross-country clinic down at the Kelly's Ford Equestrian Center, and after the clinic was over, while being untacked Catty got away, and ran down to the swollen Rappahannock River and jumped in.  Carolyn watched as Catty got swept down the river out of site.  After four terrifying hours of no sign of her, they got a call that she had been spotted 1.5 miles downstream, standing in the river.  Amazingly with the help of Richardsville Volunteer Fire and Rescue, the Little Fork Large Animal Rescue Team, and local resident Al Charles she was safely rescued.  She was a bit dehydrated and had a couple scratches, but for being in the river over four hours, this was far better than expected.  She was put on antibiotics for a few days to insure she didn't get pneumonia, but it looks like she will make a full recovery.  Here is a photo of her in the river where she was spotted, and you can see her blaze and her saddle pad.  This is a news story on the ordeal, and this an editorial.  We are beyond thankful that she is ok, and are still wondering what she was thinking to jump in that river.

Despite the very rainy conditions today, Carolyn and Dash headed out to their first show of the year at the Morven Park Benefit Schooling Show and did well.  They placed 3rd out of 6 in Training 2 with a score of 63.21%.  We are really looking forward to the first recognized show of the year in May at the PVDA Spring Show at Morven Park.  Thanks so much to Kelly Weatherhead for coming out in the yucky weather to coach us.

March 16, 2011

February was a bit of a quiet month for us with the weather, but now with spring here we are getting ramped up for the show season.  Carolyn and Dash have been working hard in lessons with Kelly Weatherhead to be ready for dressage shows in April.  Catty is slowly being brought back into work after being off to have a baby, and hopefully she will be out competing in eventing and jumpers this summer.  Ianto is continuing to do well under-saddle, and Jayvyn and Kaiya are getting prepped for in-hand shows later this spring.  We are looking forward to a wonderful show season!

Carolyn recently went to Belgium to attend the BWP Stallion approvals and had a wonderful time.  She also got to tour several large breeding farms, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the youngsters, mares and stallions at the lovely farms.  There are so many wonderful horses in Belgium in such a small area it's almost mind boggling.  Below are a few photos from the trip.

While this winter has been quite cold, we are still trying to work with the horses when possible.  Yesterday we continued working with our homebred 2008 gelding Ianto (Torino / Gottloewe) under saddle, and he was just wonderful, including for his first time out in the big field.  With his lovely temperament and athletic ability he should go far.  A couple photos from the ride below.
